Recently, I was told that an African
American Pastor told his congregation not to vote in the upcoming Presidential
election. When I heard this, I was
dumbfounded. African Americans and Women
were not given the right to vote until nearly 180 years after the Declaration
of Independence was signed. Now some 40
years later, this Pastor is asking his congregation to forget the years of
struggle and those who died to make this privilege a reality.
It is a common fact that the African American Church has been one of the most influential factors in the African American community. The African American Church fought for Civil Rights. It was the African American Church that gave African Americans the place to express their pain, their joy, and their sorrows freely. The African American Church served as a place of nurture – spiritually and intellectually. The African American Church has been a place where women have taken on the mantel of leadership.
This rumor was damaging to the African American Church and All African America Pastors. So I was please to read Roland Martin's Editor that said this story was misleading. http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/21/opinion/martin-ap-black-vote/index.html
So no matter who you support -- VOTE.
