Growing up the barber shop was an exciting place of conversation. At Jackson State University, I would hear the stories academic, sports, and community issues. Professors would come in and talk about then President Mason, former football or basketball players would talk about why the current football or basketball team was losing or winning, and local politicians would come in and talk about why the Mayor was wrong on the issues of crime, poverty and potholes. That was then.
I am sitting in a barber shop, in Virginia, writing this post and it is quiet. The center of information sharing is the television. Maybe, it is because I am new to this barber shop, but there is no conversation going on. The scenes from the movies Barber Shop with Ice Cube are not the depictions here.
Can anyone tell me if barber shop talk is a thing of the past?
