A few years ago, CNN reported that Jackson, MS had a higher per capital ration of HIV than Washington, DC. Both Jackson and Washington are predominately African American. The question becomes how does the African American community address this issue. I strongly suggest our Churches focus on sex education and the dirty little secret of the down low.
According to reports, African American females are on the rise in HIV infections. It is a result of African American males on the down low. A great scene in "For Colored Girls" is where Janet Jackson confronts her down low husband when she contracts HIV. How many times has this art become life in our community. African American women need our African American men to be open and honest-- it is`a life or death thing for our community.
Sex education in our churches must address moral values but also be prepared to meet the community where it is. The reality of no sex before marriage is the goal. However, to neglect talking about protection and prevention during sex is unrealistic; especially, when our young African American population is being hit hard by HIV. "YOUR THOUGHTS"
