Humanism and religion are not collaborating ideas. Growing up as an African American male in the South, religion was a intricate part of shaping my values. Exposure to higher education, specifically learning to reason and understanding logic, forced a clash between my understanding of religion and the role of humanity. The challenge was not whether there is a God or higher being but what role does man have in the process of life. What is the epistemology, origin, of humanity? Why have some cultures achieved greater socioeconomic status than others have? Why have some "ideas" been so influential, destructive or uplifting? My mother said once "somethings are best not known." I do not agree. We must challenge our belief system and the ideas that underpin them in order to grow. What has been your challenge?
